Sean Paul
From The Pool to the Sound System
Before he commanded stadium sound systems across six continents, Sean Paul Ryan Francis Henriques was an elite athlete representing Jamaica on the national water polo team. Born in Kingston in 1973 into a multi ethnic family of Portuguese, Afro Caribbean, Chinese and English ancestry, his unbringing defied common music industry cliches. His parents were both dedicated athletes and artists, fostering a competitive discipline that would later define his relentless recording schedule.
His musical turning point came via Kingston thriving sound system culture in the early 1990s. Mentored by producer Jeremy Harding, Sean Paul Studied the cadence and breath control of legends like Super Catm Shabba ranks, and Papa San. He made his recorded debut with 1996’s “Baby Girl,” quickly becoming a mainstay on local radio through razor sharp delivery over fast paced riddims.
