The Prince of the Battlefield — A Voice Forged in Faith
Junior X, born Richard White, is a Rastafarian chanter, songwriter, and conscious reggae artist from the Windward Road area of Rockfort, in east Kingston, Jamaica. Known on stage as The Prince of the Battlefield, Junior X draws his inspiration from the Most High channelling spiritual conviction and lyrical fire into music built to uplift, awaken, and eliminate negativity.
Raised by his mother Marjorie Major in one of Kingston’s most culturally rich communities, Junior X showed an early gift for music. He attended the Home Basic School and Elletson Primary School, where his love for song was first nurtured through the school choir a seed that would grow into a lifelong calling. He later completed his secondary education at Gaynstead High School, carrying that musical fire with him every step of the way.
From the Brimstone Crew to Going It Alone
While still in high school, Junior X co-founded a group called The Brimstone Crew alongside fellow youths from his Rockfort community. Together they wrote lyrics, sharpened their craft, and performed locally building the foundation of what would become a serious musical career. When the group eventually broke up as members migrated from the community, Junior X made the decision that would define his journey: he would continue alone, armed with nothing but talent and purpose.
That determination caught the attention of industry insiders early. In the early 1990s, his friend Daddy Screw introduced him to top-flight producer Dave Kelly, one of Jamaica’s most respected hitmakers. Kelly was immediately impressed by Junior X’s writing ability but advised him to continue developing his vocal delivery before stepping into the studio. It was honest counsel from a legendary source, and Junior X took it seriously.
Chaka Demus, Dave Kelly & the Road to Recognition
A few years later, fate opened another door. Junior X linked up with Dennis Wright the manager of iconic duo Chaka Demus & Pliers and began co-writing songs alongside one of reggae’s most celebrated hitmaking partnerships. The experience sharpened his songwriting to a professional edge and gave him his first real glimpse of the music industry from the inside. He also recorded an unreleased album for Dennis Wright during this period, adding to a growing catalogue of work that the world was not yet ready to hear but that was coming.
By 2002, that moment had arrived. Junior X began working with Herbs House Entertainment, recording a full album that showcased the full range of his conscious artistry. While the album itself remained unreleased, the label dropped several singles from the project and the streets of Jamaica took notice immediately.
Plead My Cause, Freedom & the Stage That Found Him
When Plead My Cause, Freedom, and Seek Your Goal were released in 2005, Junior X became a name that reggae fans across Jamaica could not ignore. The singles were more than hits they were statements. Each track carried the weight of years of work, spiritual devotion, and a message that resonated deeply with listeners who had felt unheard, overlooked, or tested by life.
After parting ways with Herbs House Entertainment the following year, Junior X’s momentum did not slow it accelerated. The quality of his music had already opened international doors, and he was soon performing in Japan, the United States, and the Bahamas. Back home in Jamaica, he graced the stage at some of the island’s most prestigious events Champions in Action (2006), Rebel Salute (2007), and the Bob Marley Birthday Celebrations (2007) standing alongside the culture’s finest and proving that his place in reggae was not a moment, but a movement.
