Brent Faiyaz's Mad Cobra Flex Is Going Viral

Go on TikTok right now and search “Brent Faiyaz flex” and you’ll fall into a pit of the same 20-second clip, reused across a few thousand videos, captioned some version of “wait for it.” The song is called “flex.” It samples Mad Cobra. It’s not on Spotify. It’s not on Apple Music. Type it into either app and you get nothing, or worse, you get “For Me” and have to sit there wondering if the algorithm just doesn’t get it.

For anyone who hasn’t fallen down this particular hole yet: “flex.” is a Brent Faiyaz record built over “Flex,” the 1992 Mad Cobra song, the one that peaked at 13 on the Hot 100 back when Cobra was still mostly known in dancehall circles. There’s a good story behind the original, actually  Cobra says he wrote the lyrics on an air sickness bag on a flight back from New York, after watching some exercise video on the plane’s TV and getting stuck on the line “how this lady flex like she want to have sex.” The track was supposed to be uptempo, dancehall the way Cobra usually did it, but the backing tape slowed down by accident in the studio and he just slowed his voice down to match it. That’s the version everyone knows. That’s the version that’s now getting chopped up under Brent’s vocals thirty plus years later.

The Brent version dates back to 2025, apparently recorded for the first cut of his album Icon the one that was supposed to drop September 19, his birthday, and then just… didn’t. He wiped his socials, posted the date, dropped “Tony Soprano” and “Peter Pan” as a double single on July 4 to kick things off, and then the whole rollout stalled. Nobody got an explanation. Icon eventually came out in February 2026, five months later, and “flex.” wasn’t on it. Whatever version of the album he scrapped in between the one he apparently wasn’t happy with seems to be where this song lived.
